London, 1884.The surgeon Frederick Treves discovers a man completely disfigured and diformed, become a fairground attraction.John Merrick, the "monster", owes it's name to the Elephant Man terrible accident suffered by his mother.So a few months pregnant, it is overthrown by an elephant.Impressed by such deformities Dr. Treves purchases Merrick, and snatching the violence of it's owner, and the daily humiliation of being put on show.The surgeon then thinks that "monster" is a congenital idiot.He soon discovers a wounded man in Merrick, intelligent and with great sensitivity.
